Partner organisation: Laureus Sport For Good Germany
Laureus Sport for Good and CorrelAid have developed a test to determine the level of child protection in (e.g. sports) organizations, which previously only existed in static PDF form. As part of this project, the test was published as a Web App, which presents the respective results for each organization in a visually tangible way, provides matching recommendations for child protection measures, and allows Laureus to store and evaluate the data. The app is available in four languages (German, English, Spanish, French).

Partner organisation: Deutscher Caritasverband e.V., Referat Soziale Lebenslagen und Solidarität
In collaboration with the German welfare association Caritas, we analysed data collected through their yearly survey of clients of the “Allgemeine Sozialberatung” (general social counselling). The service provides counselling for problems ranging from debt, unemployment, over inter-familiar problems to social services. We ran an explorative data analysis in R, including 37,000 questionnaires from 2010 to 2021, and pointed out several trends and core problems; for example, single mothers face a significantly higher risk of experiencing long-term unemployment than other social groups. This effect is especially pronounced for those single mothers with lower levels of education. The analysis results will be published in the journal “Neue Caritas” and provide data-based evidence for Caritas’ core demands vis-à-vis the German government, advocating for better support for vulnerable groups.

Partner organisation: Silbernetz e.V.
Until now, Elke Schilling, the founder of Silbernetz e.V. created weekly reporting statistics by manually copying and summarising the relevant data. In close collaboration with her, we built a tool that not only updates her statistics automatically but also creates various visualisations of the most recent developments.

Partner organisation: CargoRocket
With the aim of promoting sustainable mobility, the volunteer organization CargoRocket is developing a freely available route planning app for cargo bikes. As a cargo bike has its own unique requirements in terms of road conditions, these must be taken into account when planning a route. To support the project, the CorrelAid team developed a Python program that uses machine learning to classify road surface and pavement quality based on street images.

Partner organisation: Hacklab Foundation
In 2020, the Hacklab Foundation conducted the Hacklab Developer Census, a survey among the Ghanaian developer community. We explored this sample of 272 developers and compiled insights about their characteristics, preferred tools, and career backgrounds. The visual, interactive, data report can now be used to adjust the foundation’s work according to the generated insights and shared with collaboration partners to improve working conditions and diversity in the Ghanaian developer community. The report also helps to improve the visibility of the foundation and can be used by current or future developers to learn about the most used tools and technologies as well as help them choose a career path.

The Afrozensus is the largest survey among people of African descent in Germany. In order to unpack the insights hidden in the data, a CorrelAid team enabled the exploratory analysis and visualization of the data by developing an R package with easy-to-use functions. The package allows researchers – with and without extensive R skills – to quickly explore the data and create already pre-defined data visualizations. In the future, we hope to extend the use of the package for all organizations working towards inclusion and tolerance.

Partner organisation: Mare Liberum
Push-backs are a set of state measures by which refugees and migrants are forced back over a border without considering individual circumstances and allowing them to apply for asylum. Mare Liberum gathers data on the illegal practice at the Mediterranean sea and publishes documentation on observed occurrences. Supporting their mission through data, CorrelAid has helped to conduct data analysis and provide visualisations for their annual report and consulted them on data collection and storage.

Partner organisation: European Youth Parliament
The CorrelAid-project team evaluated several surveys among participants of events of the European Youth Parliament. The focus was, firstly, on socio-demographic factors such as age, gender and origin of the participants. Secondly, the impact of the respective event on the attitudes of the participants was evaluated. The team consisted of a project lead and three analysts.

Partner organisation: Erlassjahr e.V.
Erlassjahr advocates for fair and transparent debt relief processes worldwide. Until now, research efforts and results on states’ debt situation were published in an annual PDF report that featured a static world map. CorrelAid supported erlassjahr.de both in terms of an automated data generation process and the development of an interactive web-based world map. The goal was to help the team of erlassjahr to have more time focusing on their research while increasing their public outreach to interested users using an interactive version of their annual report data and world debt map.

Partner organisation: GLEIF
In July 2019, CorrelAid and Global Legal Entity Identifier Fondation (GLEIF) organized a joint hackathon on visualization of legal entity relationship data. Together with team members of GLEIF, the CorrelAid team developed an interactive visualization tool to display ownership structures of legal entities with registered Legal Entitiy Identifiers (LEI). The tool can be used to easily and intuitively explore ownership structures on the one hand and to identify existing contradictions in the declared networks.

The project consisted of designing, conducting and evaluating a member survey for TV 1880 Käfertal. The survey covered the topics of satisfaction, communication wishes, and a special survey for special target groups, whereby in particular the volunteer exercise instructors in the club were surveyed separately. In addition, a member overview was drawn up according to socio-demographic aspects on the basis of club data.
